The Capstone Project

Participants will work individually on a Capstone Project throughout the EMBA program. The Capstone Project is designed to help participants integrate the material learned during the Foundation Stage and to serve as an organizing principal for their involvement in the Mastery Stage of the EMBA. The Capstone Project requires participants to identify either a business challenge or opportunity relevant to their sponsoring organization and to develop a solution or business plan, respectively.

Participants shall choose the "unit of analysis" and "project type" for their Capstone Project from among those listed below. Participants shall select the specific business challenge or opportunity with the assistance and final approval of ICS faculty. Participants shall analyze their chosen challenge or opportunity from several different perspectives, e.g. looking at a merger from a financial perspective, a strategic perspective, an HR perspective, etc. During the Mastery Stage, each participant will be encouraged to actively participate in each element of the program with a mind to further develop and refine his/her Capstone Project.

Unit of Analysis:

  • (1) Participant's company or significant business unit of the participant's company; or
  • (2) A new business or business unit (to be started by participant's company or as a startup).

Project Type:

  • (1) Overall strategy (e.g. medium-term plan for participant's company, business unit or industry);
  • (2) Transformation (e.g. plan to strengthen the innovative capabilities of participant's company, business unit or industry);
  • (3) Opportunity identification (e.g. SWOT analysis for participant's company, business unit or industry);
  • (4) Restructuring (e.g. plan to restructure participant's company, business unit or industry, or exit the market); or
  • (5) Business plan (e.g. for a new startup or for participant's company or business unit to launch a new product or enter a new market).

Features and requirements of the Capstone Project:

Before a participant can begin working on his/her Capstone Project, he/she must come up with a proposal that will be reviewed by a faculty member (or faculty panel) assigned for this purpose. The participant shall submit the proposal for review before an assigned date. The Capstone Project proposal shall, at a minimum, contain:

  • A description of the "unit of analysis" and "project type" from the selection above.
  • A plan to fulfill the public presentation requirements of the Capstone Project.
  • A timeline for submission of the final deliverable.
  • A description of the final deliverable format.
  1. Final deliverable requirement: The faculty will provide detailed requirements for the form of the final deliverable, including the form of the deliverable (e.g. presentation, written document, video). Participants will be required to submit the deliverables by the end of the Mastery Stage. Participants are encouraged, but not required, to use digital technology to publish or present the Capstone Project. This can be done in a number of ways, including a blog chronicling the project, a web site for the project as a whole, or a comprehensive digital presentation as a part of the public presentation.
  2. Assessment requirement: The Capstone Project shall be assessed by a faculty member (or faculty panel) assigned for this purpose.
  3. Public presentation requirement: The participant shall make a presentation to senior management of his/her sponsoring company or other group of professionals capable of giving critical feedback by an assigned date.
  4. Content requirement: The Capstone Project should reflect and build on the theoretical knowledge and analytical tools provided by the EMBA curriculum and integrate theory and practical experience. In particular, the Capstone Project should reflect the participant's learning regarding at least one theme (as described below) from each of the two market immersions (Silicon Valley and Bangalore) and one GNW (Global Network Week) group project undertaken during the Mastery Stage.
