Guest Speaker: George Olcott, Non-Executive Director, Nippon Sheet Glass NKSJ Holdings
Dr George Olcott, a senior fellow at the Judge Business School, University of Cambridge, visited Professor Jesper Edman's Japanese Business & Economy class on February 4. Dr Olcott, who is also a non-executive director at Nippon Sheet Glass, gave a lecture on corporate governance in Japan, focusing on the unique challenges and opportunities presented by Japan's corporate governance system, and how this is adapting to the demands of globalisation.
Dr Olcott, who graduated with a degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics from the University of Oxford, has extensive practical and theoretical knowledge of the effects of international pressures on Japanese business, having completed a PhD dissertation on the subject and worked for many years as a manager for UBS Investment Bank in Tokyo. Since his move into academia in 2001, Dr Olcott has also spent time as a visiting scholar at the Policy Research Institute of the Japanese Ministry of Finance.
