Guest Speaker: Mr Yasuharu Hoshino, CEO of Hoshino Resorts
On May 17, the EMBA Management Essentials 2 class led by Prof. Ken Kusunoki welcomed Mr. Yoshiharu Hoshino, CEO of Hoshino Resorts, as a guest speaker. The students seized this opportunity to learn from one of the most innovative CEOs in Japan.
Mr. Hoshino introduced himself and explained that he was born into the hotel industry--the family business--before sharing how he created and expanded the Hoshino Group. He showed each of the Hoshino Group entities and its individual focus.
He then spoke about the importance of differentiation and strategy to achieve success in a competitive market and how he used Michael Porter's three keys to strategic positioning: the creation of a unique value position, making trade-offs, which includes choosing what not to do (sometimes the hardest part), and creating fit among a company's activities.
Mr. Hoshino gave specific examples on how he adopted this strategic positioning in his hotel business and how they led to profitability and efficiency. He explained how his hotel group improved productivity by using "multitasking teams" and created an open culture in which employees can express their opinions freely and easily through its "flat organization".
Mr. Hoshino then took questions from the students, who were clearly inspired by his innovative approach and would like to have continued the discussion all day. Access to dynamic business leaders such as Mr. Hoshino, who share their unique insight and offer valuable advice, is part of Hitotsubashi ICS's unique value proposition.
