Applied Corporate Finance | Guest Speaker
On July 1st, Professor Tomonori Ito invited Mr. John Ehara, co-founder of Unison Capital, one of the most successful private equity funds in Japan, as the guest speaker for the Applied Corporate Finance class. Before he co-founded Unison Capital in 1998, he was a General Partner and the Head of Investment Banking at Goldman Sachs in Tokyo.
Mr. Ehara initially made a presentation about the private equity industry and his company's principles. He talked about how private equity funds manage and deal with investee companies, strategic positioning of Unison Capital, and explained how private equity funds can add value to the portfolio companies.
After the one-hour presentation, the students were given time to ask questions to Mr. Ehara. The questions were on why he decided to take the risk to start a private equity fund, which was something totally unknown in Japan, what he values in people, his views on the importance of ESG and long-term oriented mindset, and how the students should decide their career through "proactive struggling." The students were able to learn not only about private equity, but also about the need for long term thinking in management, how to build a fruitful career, and how to become a strong leader.
We would like to thank Mr. Ehara for taking the time to join the class as a guest speaker and share his experience with our students.
