Hitotsubashi ICS to launch EMBA Program in September 2017

EMBA_News.png Following the success of its highly-regarded MBA program, Hitotsubashi ICS will add a one-year Executive MBA ("EMBA"), with the first batch of participants due to matriculate in September 2017. Consistent with its MBA program, the EMBA program will be taught entirely in English with the mission of integrating the "Best of Both Worlds". Uniquely, the Hitotsubashi ICS EMBA program will explore the strengths of both Japanese and Western management practices and seek to integrate those strengths in order to leverage them to meet the challenges of a changing business environment. The program focuses on the real world application of management theories, and as such will involve participants traveling to locations outside of Tokyo to learn first hand about current issues such as doing business in emerging economies, technological disruption and innovation.

The program is designed for elite participants in their 30s-40s who are looking for a part-time program, which will develop their management skills with minimal time away from their organizations. The course will be delivered via a combination of residential and virtual classes. Due to the fact that participants will be required to attend residential classes for at least six weeks during the one-year program (not including weekends) and to travel overseas, support from a sponsoring organization is critical to the success of each participant. In turn, sponsoring organizations benefit by providing their talent with critical training to assist their development as well-rounded future executives, while minimizing disruptions to their business.


The program is split into 2 modules: the Foundation Stage (4 months) and the Mastery Stage (8 months).

Foundation Stage:
The main goal of this stage is for the participants to understand basic management theories and to acquire key analytical tools and leadership skills that are required for proceeding to the Mastery Stage. These "foundational" theories, tools and skills are provided through ten core courses that are delivered via an intensive two-week program in September to be held on the Hitotsubashi ICS campus in Tokyo, followed by seven weekend classes offered via a combination of residential classes in Tokyo and virtual classes. At the conclusion of the Foundation Stage, participants will sit examinations in order to qualify for the Mastery Stage.
The Foundation Stage will also provide participants the opportunity to network with each other and acquire knowledge based on their respective experiences.
Mastery Stage:
The main goal of this stage is for the participants to effectively apply the theories, tools and skills learned during the Foundation Stage to real world business challenges and opportunities. Befitting the program's focus on real world applications, this stage comprises two-thirds of the total EMBA program. This stage begins with a week-long residential program on the Hitotsubashi ICS campus in Tokyo in early January. During this Mastery Launchpad, participants learn to integrate the basic management theories, tools and skills learned during the Foundation Stage in order to solve business challenges and exploit business opportunities. Participants will also determine a theme for their individual Capstone Projects, which is the key deliverable for this stage.
The Capstone Project will require each participant to develop a plan to solve a business problem or exploit a business opportunity that is relevant to each participant's sponsoring organization. The theme of each Capstone Project will be decided by the participant (with input from faculty) pursuant to guidelines provided by faculty. Participants will present the progress of their Capstone Projects to other participants and faculty at Mastery Forums offered over four weekends. They will then have the opportunity to refine their work based on feedback provided to them during these sessions. At the end of the program, participants are expected to present the conclusions of their Capstone Projects to their sponsoring organizations.

During the Mastery Stage, participants will spend one week each on the following activities:
• Expedition to Bangalore, India (February): Participants will have the opportunity to learn first-hand about the challenges of doing business in a developing economy, including best practices to address these challenges.
• Expedition to Silicon Valley, US (April): Participants will have the opportunity to learn first-hand about the impact of disruptive technology on business from the forerunners of the technology revolution.
• Global Network Week (June): Participants will have the opportunity to spend one week in intensive classes held at selected GNAM (Global Network for Advanced Management) partner schools. This will allow participants to learn about and experience global viewpoints through direct interaction and group-based project work with participants of elite EMBA programs worldwide. Total course duration is 12 months, starting in September 2017.


EMBA participants will typically be in their 30s to 40s and recognized by their organizations as having the potential to join senior management within 10 years. As all lectures and classes will be held in English, participants must be proficient in English on a business level.

One of the key benefits of an EMBA program is the network that participants develop within each cohort and as such, we will carefully determine the mix of participants. Each cohort will reflect the diversity that we see in the real business environment - those with different industry backgrounds, different nationalities and genders. Each cohort will be comprised of around 15 participants-- a size that is designed to provide a balance between diversity of opinion and experience while maintaining an intimate environment to facilitate intensive learning.


There is a two-step admissions process:
1. Submit an application package by early March 2017
2. Selected participants will be invited to an oral interview

The application package should include the participants' TOEIC/TOEFL score, a sponsoring letter from the sponsoring organization and the participants' essays in response to a set of questions. Although not required, participants may also include a GMAT score, should they wish to do so. The application package for the September 2017 intake will be released in November 2016.

The oral interview will be held entirely in English and will employ the standard case interview method, whereby participants will be provided with a short business case to be discussed with the interviewing panel.
